Terms of Service
Last updated: 2 July 2026 · Metal Stack — a trading name of Peter Smith
1. Who we are
Metal Stack is a precious-metals verification service operated by Peter Smith, a sole trader trading as “Metal Stack”. Our correspondence address is Metal Stack, c/o This N That Ltd, Unit 3, 2A Cambridge Street, Bletchley, Milton Keynes MK2 2TP, United Kingdom. You can reach us at hello@metalstack.co.uk. By booking a verification or using this site you agree to these terms.
2. The service and its limits
We carry out non-destructive bench tests on items you send us — calibrated weight, magnet, surface composition and conductivity (principally XRF, with a Sigma conductivity meter alongside), plus a visual inspection of hallmarks, marks, wear and construction — and produce a permanent public register record, a printed verification card with a QR code and a tamper-evident hologram.
- Our testing is non-destructive: it reads the surface and bulk properties of an item, not its full internal structure.
- A record indicates an item is consistent with the stated metal. It is not a guarantee of authenticity.
- Our fee covers the testing itself, whatever the result. If an item is not consistent with its stated metal, or the result is inconclusive, we record that outcome honestly; it does not receive a Verified record or tamper seal, and the fee still applies.
- It is not a statement of legal fineness and not a substitute for official hallmarking or assay-office certification. Under the Hallmarking Act 1973, legal fineness is determined only by a UK Assay Office hallmark.
- A record is not an appraisal, valuation or investment advice.
See our Verification Disclaimer for the full scope-and-limits statement.
3. Booking and payment
You book and pay for a verification package through this site. The price shown at booking is the total price: it includes the bench testing, the register record and printed card for each verified item, and insured, tracked return postage to a UK address. Postage to us is yours to arrange. Payment is taken securely by Stripe; we do not store your card details. Do not post anything to us until you have received your order reference and shipping instructions.
- At booking you expressly request that we begin work within your 14-day cancellation period, from the moment your items arrive — see the Cancellation policy for what that means for your cancellation rights.
- Items with a declared value above £1,000 must be arranged with us in writing before you book, so appropriate insurance can be put in place. We may decline items we cannot adequately insure.
4. Posting items to us
- You are responsible for packaging your items adequately and for postage insurance until they are delivered to us. We recommend a tracked, insured service.
- Once your items reach us we hold and handle them with reasonable care.
- Our liability for loss of or damage to an item while in our possession is limited to the value you declare for that item when you book, up to a maximum of £1,000 per item. If an item is worth more, you must declare its higher value in advance and we must accept it in writing; we may decline items we cannot adequately insure.
- Verified items are returned to you tracked and insured.
5. Turnaround
Any turnaround time we quote is an estimate and not a guarantee. We will keep you updated by email at each stage.
6. The public register record
- A verified item receives a permanent record at metalstack.app/{id}.
- Records are permanent. We do not delete history; corrections are made only by adding new entries to an append-only, hash-chained event trail, so the record's integrity can be checked.
- We may flag or revoke a record (for example where we have evidence of fraud, theft, a damaged seal or a mismatch). A flag or revocation is itself recorded in the event trail.
7. Your responsibilities
- You confirm that you own each item you submit, or are authorised by the owner to submit it.
- You must not submit stolen goods or goods you have reason to believe are stolen.
- You must give us accurate descriptions of what you are sending.
8. Acceptable use of the site and register
You must not misuse this site or register — for example by copying, scraping or republishing records to imply an endorsement we have not given, by creating lookalike cards or QR codes, or by attempting to interfere with the service. Genuine records exist only at metalstack.app.
9. Liability
- We supply our service with reasonable care and skill, as required by the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
- We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for any decision you or a third party makes in reliance on a record (for example a purchase, sale or valuation).
- Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded — including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.
10. Intellectual property
The design of this site, the register format, our text, marks and the structure of each record belong to us. You may share a link to a record, but you may not reproduce the site or records in a way that misrepresents them.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version in force is the one published here when you book. Material changes will be reflected in the “last updated” date above.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England & Wales, and the courts of England & Wales have jurisdiction.
